IraqAbu Salabikh is the site of a small Sumerian city-state located 20 km northwest of ancient Nippur in Iraq. The settlement dates from the Neolithic through the late 3rd millennium BC. Excavations from 1963-1989 uncovered over 500 cuneiform tablets from c. 2500 BC, including the oldest known copy of the Instructions of Shuruppak, one of the earliest works of Sumerian literature. The city's ancient name remains uncertain, with Eresh and Kesh among suggested identifications.
