Río Azul

Río Azul is an ancient Maya city in Guatemala's Petén Department, situated southeast of the Azul river near the Mexico-Belize border [1]. At its peak during the Early Classic period (250–600 AD), the settlement covered approximately 1.3 square kilometres and featured around 729 major structures, including temples, palaces, and residential compounds [1]. As the most significant site within Río Azul National Park, Río Azul represents a major Maya urban centre that flourished during the 5th and 6th centuries CE [1].
