Naranjo

Naranjo (ancient name Wak Kab'nal) is a major Pre-Columbian Maya city in Guatemala's Peten Basin, occupied from about 500 BC to 950 AD. The second-largest Maya kingdom in the Peten after Tikal, it covers approximately 8 km2 with over 389 recorded structures, two ballcourts, and 48 stelae. A dynasty of 44 kings governed the site, most notably the warrior-queen Lady Six Sky (Ix Wak Chanil Ahaw), who ruled from 682 to 741 AD after being installed by her father from Dos Pilas. Now part of Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park, the site has suffered severe looting with about 270 tunnels documented.
