Ixlu

Located on the isthmus between Petén Itzá and Salpetén lakes in northern Guatemala, Ixlu was a major port city of the Classic and Postclassic Maya periods [1]. The site controlled vital water trade routes via the Ixlu River to Lake Petén Itzá, serving as a strategic commercial hub [1]. Archaeologists have identified Ixlu as Saklamakhal (also spelled Saclemacal), the capital of the Kowoj Maya dynasty [1].
