Ixkun Mayan Arqueológico Site

A major Maya archaeological site in the Peten Department of Guatemala, 6.5 km north of Dolores, occupied from the Preclassic through the Postclassic period with its peak between AD 600-800. The site contains 51 architectural groups including temples, a ballcourt, an E-Group astronomical complex, and an acropolis. Stela 1, erected in AD 790, is the tallest stela in all of Peten at 4.13 m high. Alfred Maudslay's 1887 excavation of the site was one of the earliest formal archaeological investigations in the Maya Lowlands.
