Sitio Arqueológico Motul

Motul de San Jose, known anciently as Ik'a' ('Windy Water'), is an ancient Maya civic-ceremonial centre north of Lake Peten Itza in Guatemala's Peten department. First settled between 600-300 BC, it grew into an important political and economic centre during the Late Classic period (AD 650-950), shifting allegiance between Tikal and Calakmul. The site is identified as the source of Ik-style polychrome ceramics depicting courtly scenes of Maya aristocracy. Excavations from 1998-2003 mapped extensive settlement patterns across the region.
