El Ceibal

Seibal (El Ceibal) is a major Maya archaeological site in the Peten Department of Guatemala, first settled around 900 BC and spanning some 2,000 years of occupation. The largest city in the Pasion River region, it reached a population of approximately 10,000 during its Terminal Classic peak (830-890 AD), when monuments were still being dedicated after the Classic Maya collapse had engulfed most of the Peten. The site features over 50 carved stelae, a ball court, a round temple, and three architectural groups connected by sacbeob, with a cultural hybrid of Maya and central Mexican design elements.
