The Acropolis of Ancient Thasos

The Acropolis of ancient Thasos crowns a hilltop at 137 metres above the town of Limenas on the island of Thasos, Greece, with origins dating to the 7th century BC when colonists from Paros settled the island. The second summit holds a temple dedicated to Athena dating from the early 5th century BC, while the highest peak contains a sanctuary to the god Pan with an anaglyph depicting him with hoofs and pipes carved directly into the rock. Armoured marble fortification walls were built by the island's first inhabitants and later reconstructed across multiple periods by Persians, Macedonians, and Romans. Excavations have uncovered pottery, jewelry, coins, and the foundations of an ancient theatre.
