GreeceOriginally built by Philip II of Macedon around 356 BC at the foot of the acropolis of Philippi, the city he founded to control nearby gold mines. The theatre was substantially modified in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD with expanded seating and a three-storey Roman stage building. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Philippi since 2016, it hosts the Philippi-Thassos Festival, Greece's second most important ancient drama festival after Epidaurus.
