Archaeological Site of Ancient Thasos

Ruins of a prosperous colony on the north Aegean island of Thasos, founded by settlers from Paros led by Telesicles, father of the poet Archilochus [1] [2]. The city grew wealthy from gold mines yielding 200-300 talents annually, plus marble quarries and wine exports [1] [3] [4] [5]. The ancient agora preserves the cenotaph of the early settler Glaucus [6] [7] [8]. Temples to Heracles and Athena survive among the ruins [1] [5].
