Nicopolis ad Istrum

Nicopolis ad Istrum ("City of Victory") is a Roman and Early Byzantine city near the village of Nikyup, 20 km north of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. Founded by Emperor Trajan to commemorate his victories over the Dacians in 101 and 106 AD, the city was planned on an orthogonal grid with a forum, basilica, odeon, thermae, and 26 km aqueducts. It flourished under the Antonines and Severans, minting 900 different bronze coin emissions. In the 4th century, Gothic bishop Ulfilas settled near the city and created the Gothic alphabet, translating the Bible into Gothic.
