Abritus

Abritus was a major Roman fortified city in the province of Moesia Inferior, founded as a military camp around 78 AD near modern Razgrad, Bulgaria. It is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Abritus in 251 AD, where Emperor Decius and his son were killed by Goths -- the first time a Roman emperor died in battle. Excavations revealed the largest Late Antique gold treasure found in Bulgaria: 835 coins weighing 4 kg. The archaeological reserve, established in 1984, spans 250 acres.
