Lauriacum

Lauriacum (modern Lorch-Enns) was a major Roman legionary fortress and civilian town at the confluence of the Danube and Enns rivers in the province of Noricum. The Legio II Italica was permanently garrisoned here from around 205 AD under Septimius Severus, and the adjacent civilian settlement achieved municipal status under Caracalla in 212 AD, making it the last town founded by Romans in Noricum. The rhomboid-shaped camp measured roughly 539 x 398 metres with defensive walls, towers, barracks, and a valetudinarium. Now a UNESCO World Heritage component of the Danube Limes, its museum houses one of Austria's most important Roman-period collections.
