Aguntum

Aguntum was a Roman municipium and trading hub in the Drau valley, East Tyrol, flourishing from the 1st to 5th centuries AD [1]. Located 4 km east of modern Lienz, it served as a regional administrative center serving the Alpine mining operations of iron, copper, zinc and gold [1]. The settlement was later elevated to a bishopric in the early Christian period, becoming a titular see after its status as a residential diocese ceased [1]. Today, the site operates as an archaeological park with ongoing excavations by the University of Innsbruck [2].
