Flavia Solva

Flavia Solva was a Roman municipium in the province of Noricum, located on the Mur river near modern Wagna and Leibnitz in Styria, Austria -- the only Roman city in Austrian Styria. Founded as a Celtic-Roman settlement around 15 AD, it received municipium status circa 70 AD under Emperor Vespasian. The city featured a grid of broad gravel-paved streets with rectangular insulae of about 60 by 70 metres, and Noricum's only known amphitheatre (80 x 35 metres) with wooden benches on stone foundations. In 166 AD the Marcomanni breached the Danube frontier and partially destroyed the city, which was rebuilt under Commodus.
