City of Enns

Enns, in Upper Austria, stands on the site of Lauriacum, a major Roman legionary base on the Danube Limes. The legio II Italica established the only legionary camp in the province of Noricum here at the end of the 2nd century AD, housing approximately 6,000 soldiers. An extensive civilian settlement grew to the north and southwest, likely achieving municipal status in the early 3rd century and becoming the episcopal seat of northern Noricum in the 5th century. Archaeological excavations between 1960 and 1966 uncovered Roman walls dated to 180 AD along with the first Christian church from the 4th-5th century. The Lauriacum Museum, founded in 1892, displays over 1,200 artefacts including military equipment, funerary monuments, and a rare Roman ceiling fresco.
