City of Enns

Enns, in Upper Austria, stands on the site of Lauriacum, a major Roman legionary base on the Danube Limes [1] [2]. An extensive civilian settlement grew to the north and southwest, likely achieving municipal status in the early 3rd century and becoming the episcopal seat of northern Noricum in the 5th century [1] [2]. Archaeological excavations between 1960 and 1966 uncovered Roman walls dated to 180 AD [2] [3] [4].
