Devil's Lair

Devil's Lair is a single-chamber cave of about 200 m² formed in Quaternary dune limestone on the Leeuwin‑Naturaliste Ridge, 5 km from the modern Western Australian coast[1]. The deposit reaches 660 cm depth with over 100 distinct layers intercalated with flowstone[1]. Since 1973, excavations in the cave centre have uncovered 10 trenches, with archaeological evidence—including hearths, bone, and stone artefacts—extending to 350 cm depth at layer 30[1]. The site demonstrates human habitation of Southwest Australia beginning 50,000 years before present[1].
