Gabarnmung Cave

Gabarnmung is an archaeological and rock art site in southwestern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Excavations revealed habitation dating back at least 44,000 years, making it among the oldest radiocarbon-dated sites in Australia [1]. The site contains the oldest securely dated prehistoric rock art in Australia, with fragments exceeding 28,000 years old [1]. The cave was still visited by Jawoyn people within living memory, possibly until the 1950s, but its existence had been forgotten until its 2006 rediscovery [1].
