Karta

Karta is the Kaurna name Karta Pintingga, meaning Island of the Dead, for the island known as Kangaroo Island in the state of South Australia [1]. Kangaroo Island was separated from mainland Australia around 10,000 years ago, when sea level rose after the last glacial period [1]. Stone tools and shell middens on the island show that Aboriginal people once lived on Kangaroo Island [1]. The island's native population, sometimes called the Kartan people, disappeared from the archaeological record after the land became an island around 10,000 years ago [1]. The Kartan industry produced a large quantity of exceptionally large stone tools, probably more than 10,000 years ago, that were found on Karta [2].
