Cloggs Cave

Cloggs Cave is a limestone cave near Buchan, Victoria, on GunaiKurnai Country along the Snowy River gorge. Rediscovered in 1971 and first excavated by 1972, joint research by the GunaiKurnai Land and Waters Corporation and Monash University in 2019-2020 uncovered two miniature fireplaces with Casuarina wood sticks bearing traces of fat, dating to 11,000-12,000 years ago. These represent Australia's oldest known wooden artefacts and evidence of ritual practice spanning 500 generations of cultural transmission. A 2,000-year-old grinding stone with bogong moth residue is the world's earliest confirmed evidence of insect food processing.
