Nagara (Ancient city)

Nagara, also known as Dionysopolis, was an ancient Greco-Indian city in what is now eastern Afghanistan, associated with the site of Nagara Ghundi about 4 km west of Jalalabad near the junction of the Surkhab and Kabul rivers. Referenced by ancient writers Arrian and Ptolemy, the site preserves archaeological remains from the Kushan-Hephthalite period (1st-6th century AD). Archaeologist Zemaryalai Tarzi proposed that Greek populations from the fallen cities of Ai-Khanoum and Takht-i Sangin resettled in the Jalalabad plains around Dionysopolis, contributing to the Greco-Buddhist art of nearby Hadda.
