Romano-British temple complex on West Hill dedicated to Mercury, built atop a Neolithic sanctuary. Excavated 1977-79, the site yielded over 60,000 pottery fragments, 250,000 animal bones, and a limestone cult statue of Mercury. The stone temple, erected c. 100 AD, measured 14 x 12 metres and was surrounded by living quarters and shops. Inscribed lead curse tablets and votive offerings attest to a thriving Mercury cult. In the 5th century, a timber church replaced the destroyed pagan temple.
