Built in the early 4th century AD, the Golden Gate (Zlatna vrata, Porta Aurea) was the grand northern entrance to Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia [1]. As the principal gate, it was richly adorned with columns and statuary to emphasize its importance as the main ceremonial entrance [1]. Following the fall of Rome, the gate was sealed off during the Middle Ages and its decorative elements were lost [1]. It was reopened and restored in modern times and now functions as a popular tourist attraction within the historic old town [1].
