Danilo, Croatia

Danilo is a village near Sibenik, Croatia, and the eponymous type site of the Neolithic Danilo culture (c. 4700-3900 BCE). The fertile valley between karst ridges supported one of the earliest agricultural communities on the Dalmatian coast. Excavations revealed pits and post holes subdivided into five occupation phases, with distinctive pottery decorated in incised geometric patterns filled with white and red pigment. The culture's hallmark vessel is the rhyton, a four-legged decorated container with a large carrying handle, believed to have played an important role in Neolithic ritual practices.
