Diocletian's Palace

Diocletian's Palace is an ancient Roman palace and fortress complex in Split, Croatia. Built at the end of the third century AD, it served as the retirement residence for Roman Emperor Diocletian [1]. The massive complex was designed with approximately half reserved for Diocletian's personal use, while the remainder housed a military garrison [1]. The structure was erected on a peninsula roughly six kilometres southwest of Salona, the ancient capital of Dalmatia and one of the largest cities of the late Roman Empire with a population of approximately 60,000 [1]. Salona was also the birthplace of Diocletian [1].
