Amathus was one of the ancient royal cities of Cyprus until about 300 BC[1]. Located on the southern coast in front of Agios Tychonas, about 9.7 km east of Limassol, the city housed Cyprus' second-most-important sanctuary of Aphrodite, after Paphos[1]. The settlement was notable for its multilingual society speaking Greek, Phoenician, and Eteocypriot languages[3], and derived economic power from copper trade[3]. Notable finds include the Amathus sarcophagus, a limestone masterpiece from the 2nd quarter of the 5th century BCE[2]. Archaeological work continues at the site, with many finds exhibited in the Limassol Museum.
