The Macellum of Naples was the macellum (market building) of the Roman city of Neapolis, modern Naples, located today beneath the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore[1]. First constructed in the 5th or 4th century BC, the site originally served as the agora during the Greek period[1]. When Neapolis came under Roman control, it was converted into a macellum—a specialized market building for provisions[1]. The structure remained in use until the 5th century AD when it was buried by a mudslide, likely caused by flooding[1].
