Ruins of a prosperous colony on the north Aegean island of Thasos, founded around 680-650 BC by settlers from Paros led by Telesicles, father of the poet Archilochus. The city grew wealthy from gold mines on the mainland yielding 200-300 talents annually, plus marble quarries and wine exports. The ancient agora, developed from the 6th century BC onward, preserves the cenotaph of the early settler Glaucus. Massive marble-faced city walls, a Classical-era theatre, and temples to Heracles and Athena survive among the ruins.
