Assos Ruins

Ancient Greek city on the Aegean coast of Canakkale province, Turkey, founded by Aeolian colonists from Lesbos around 1000-900 BC. Its acropolis at 238 m elevation holds the only archaic Doric temple in Anatolia, dedicated to Athena in 530 BC. Aristotle lived here from 348-345 BC, founding a philosophical academy. Excavations since 1881 have revealed a theatre, gymnasium, agora, bouleuterion, and 3 km of Hellenistic walls. On the UNESCO Tentative List since 2017.
