South KoreaThe Sanseong Belt is one of five zones within the Gyeongju Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2000. It centres on the Myeonghwal Mountain Fortress (Myeonghwal Sanseong), a defensive fortification built by the Silla Kingdom (57 BC - 935 AD) to protect the capital city of Gyeongju. The fortress belt includes strategic defensive facilities along the east coast, representing the military architecture of the Silla dynasty during its nearly millennium-long rule over the Korean peninsula.
