The Hwangnyongsa Belt

The Hwangnyongsa Belt is one of five subregions of the Gyeongju Historic Areas, a World Heritage Site in Gyeongju, South Korea [1]. The belt is centred on the ruins of the temple Hwangnyongsa, which the excavated foundation stones show covered 72,500 square metres [1]. The temple Hwangnyongsa was built during the Silla period under royal patronage, with construction starting in 553 under King Jinheung and not fully completed until 644 [2]. Mongolian invasions in 1238 burned the temple's pagoda, of which only the foundation stones survive [2].
