UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, encompassing the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) in South Korea. The site spans five zones including the Namsan outdoor museum with rock-carved Buddhas, Wolseong palace grounds with Cheomseongdae -- Asia's oldest observatory -- and the Daereungwon royal tomb complex where golden crowns and the Cheonmado horse painting were discovered. Archaeological findings include ruins of 122 temples, 53 stone statues, 64 pagodas, and 16 stone lanterns. Often called "the museum without walls" with 52 designated cultural assets.
