Roman Bridge of Vila Formosa

A monumental Roman bridge crossing the Seda stream near the village of Seda in Alter do Chao, Portalegre District, Portugal. Built at the end of the 1st century AD, it is approximately 116.5 metres long, 8.4 metres high, and 6.7 metres wide. Six round arches with 33 voussoirs each are supported on quadrangular piers decorated with projecting mouldings, a raised cornice, and gargoyles. The bridge was part of a Roman road connecting Lisbon to Merida. Classified as a National Monument in 1910, it was restored in the 1930s.
