Tambo Colorado

Tambo Colorado is one of the best-preserved Inca adobe complexes on the Peruvian coast, located in the Pisco River Valley of the Ica Region. Built during the reign of Tupac Yupanqui in the late 15th century, the site features multiple structures arranged around a large trapezoidal central plaza up to 150 metres wide. Its adobe walls retain traces of the vivid horizontal stripes of red, black, white, and yellow ochre that once covered them, giving the site its name meaning 'red resting place'. The complex served as an administrative and military control center along the Inca Royal Road connecting the coast to the highlands, with characteristic recessed trapezoidal niches and a ceremonial ushnu platform.
