Ancon Archaeological Site

One of Peru's most important archaeological sites, located on the central coast in the Bay of Ancon, with evidence of continuous human occupation spanning 10,000 years from the preceramic period through Inca times. Its vast pre-Hispanic necropolis, one of the largest in the Andes, yielded thousands of burials with tattooed bodies, copper ornaments, and richly colored textiles. First major excavations by Wilhelm Reiss and Alphons Stubel in 1875 are considered pioneering work in Peruvian scientific archaeology.
