Tlatelolco

Tlatelolco is a major archaeological site in Mexico City centered on the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, preserving remains of the pre-Columbian Mexica city-state founded in 1337. Its marketplace was the largest in Mesoamerica, with an estimated 60,000 daily traders. The site features a multi-phase main pyramid and temples to Quetzalcoatl, Ehecatl, and Huitzilopochtli. A 2009 excavation uncovered a mass grave of 49 ritually arranged bodies. The Spanish established here the Colegio de Santa Cruz, the first institution of higher education in the Americas.
