Tula is the ancient capital of the Toltec Empire in Hidalgo, Mexico, flourishing from approximately 900 to 1150 AD with an estimated population of 60,000. The site's centerpiece is the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, crowned by four colossal basalt warrior columns (Atlanteans) standing 4.6 metres tall. The archaeological zone includes the earlier settlement of Tula Chico and the main ceremonial precinct of Tula Grande, with two ball courts, palace complexes, and temple pyramids. Tula's architectural and artistic similarities to Chichen Itza remain a subject of scholarly debate.
