Tepoztlan

Tepoztlan is home to El Tepozteco, an Aztec temple perched at 2,310 meters atop Tepozteco Hill in Morelos, Mexico. The temple was dedicated to Tepoztecatl, the god of pulque, and dates to the Postclassic period with construction beginning around 1200 CE under the Xochimilca. It consists of a 6.4-meter platform supporting a temple base with 13 steps symbolizing the 13 heavens of Mesoamerican cosmology. Inscribed stones bear the name of Aztec emperor Ahuizotl and the date 1502 CE. The site was abandoned during the Spanish conquest when Cortes's forces burned Tepoztlan to the ground.
