Neapolis Archaeological Park

The Neapolis Archaeological Park in Syracuse, Sicily, is one of the largest archaeological areas in the Mediterranean, symbolizing the city's expansion under Gelon in the 5th century BC. It features a Greek Theatre carved into the Temenite hill that held 12,000-14,000 spectators, the Altar of Hieron II -- the largest stone altar in the Greek world at nearly 200 m long -- and the Latomia del Paradiso with the famous Ear of Dionysius, a cave 23 m high and 60 m deep. The park also preserves a Roman amphitheatre of dimensions close to Verona's arena. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
