ItalyA Greek colony of Magna Graecia on the Ionian Sea near modern Monasterace, Calabria, Italy, and one of the first cities in the region to mint silver coins. Conquered and razed by Dionysius I of Syracuse in 389 BC, then destroyed by Rome in 200 BC for siding with Hannibal. First excavated by Paolo Orsi in 1911-1913. The site is famous for its Hellenistic mosaics, including the 1969 "House of the Dragon" mosaic and a large 2012 thermal bath floor depicting dragons, dolphins, and a hippocampus.
