Kemune (Zahiku)

Kemune is a 3,400-year-old Mittani Empire city, thought to be ancient Zakhiku, discovered when drought lowered the Mosul Dam reservoir in Iraq's Kurdistan region. A monumental palace with mudbrick walls over six feet thick features rare red and blue wall paintings -- only the second Mittani site with such murals. Ten cuneiform tablets found inside may clarify Mittani political and economic history. The city was likely founded around 1800 BC and destroyed by an earthquake circa 1350 BC.
