Nekromanteion of Acheron

An ancient Greek Oracle of the Dead in Epirus, devoted to Hades and Persephone, where pilgrims came to communicate with deceased ancestors. Located where the Acheron, Pyriphlegethon, and Cocytus rivers converge, the site was believed to be a gateway to the underworld. Visitors underwent isolation, hallucinogenic diets, and rituals before descending through underground corridors. Excavated by Sotirios Dakaris in 1958-64, research revealed the chamber was acoustically engineered to create intense psycho-acoustic effects. The sanctuary flourished in the 3rd-2nd centuries BC and was destroyed by the Romans in 167 BC.
