Asine

An ancient Greek city on the coast of the Argolid, mentioned by Homer in the Iliad as subject to Diomedes of Argos. Habitation spans from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age and into the Early Iron Age. Swedish Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf initiated excavations in 1922, making Asine Sweden's first major fieldwork in Greece. The Barbouna hill yielded a Mycenaean cemetery (c. 1600-1100 BC) with chamber tombs and the famous "Lord of Asine" statuette. The city was destroyed by Argos c. 740 BC.
