Larisa, Argos

Larisa is the ancient and medieval acropolis of Argos, situated on a high rocky hill west of the city center [1]. According to geographer Strabo, the site takes its name from a group of Pelasgians who inhabited the area [1]. The summit is crowned by ruins of a Byzantine-Venetian castle, while midway down the slopes lie the Panagia Katakekrymeni-Portokalousa monastery and the Monastery of Agia Marina, a functioning nunnery [1]. The site was fortified and in continuous use for nineteen centuries [1].
