Archaeological Site of Mycenae

Fortified citadel in the Argolid plain that dominated the eastern Mediterranean from the 15th to 12th century BC. Its Cyclopean walls, Lion Gate (c. 1250 BC), and Grave Circles yielded spectacular gold artifacts including the Mask of Agamemnon. The Treasury of Atreus, the largest corbelled dome until the Roman Pantheon, stands nearby. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, Mycenae is indissolubly linked to the Homeric epics.
