Burnt Mound in Fox Hollies Park

The Burnt Mound in Fox Hollies Park is a Bronze Age archaeological feature in the Acocks Green area of south Birmingham, scheduled as an ancient monument in 2002. The low oval mound stands approximately 0.3 metres high and measures 14 by 9 metres, composed of heat-crazed cobbles in gritty black soil. A geophysical survey revealed dense concentrations of stone along with at least seven probable pits, three hearths, and four troughs beneath the surface. Burnt mounds, also known in Ireland as fulachtai fia, are thought to have been used primarily for cooking by heating stones to boil water in troughs, though some may have served as saunas. Around 100 examples have been identified in England, with their main phase of use spanning the Early to Late Bronze Age.
