Eastern Gate of Philippopolis

The Eastern Gate of Philippopolis was one of three main entrances to the ancient Roman city (modern Plovdiv). Built in the 2nd century AD during Hadrian's reign on the strategic road to Byzantium and the Bosphorus, the gate was completely rebuilt in the 4th century and saw partial repairs in the 5th century [1]. Discovered in the 1970s, the gate served as a major gateway for trade and travel between Thrace and the eastern Roman provinces [1].
