Perperikon

Perperikon is the largest megalithic ensemble in the Balkans, situated on a 470m rocky hill in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains near Kardzhali, Bulgaria. Occupation traces date to the 6th millennium BC, with intensive rock-carved construction during the Bronze Age (18th-12th centuries BC). The site features a labyrinthine palace of over 50 rock-hewn halls, corridors, and staircases, plus a ritual chamber with a 2m-diameter altar. Scholars identify it as the legendary Oracle of Dionysus, where priestesses allegedly prophesied for Alexander the Great. Romans fortified it in the 1st century BC, Christians built basilicas in the 5th century, and it was abandoned after the Ottoman invasion of 1362.
