Domus Eirene

An ancient Roman peristyle house in Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv) built in the mid-3rd century AD, likely after the devastating Gothic siege of 250 AD during the Crisis of the Third Century. The residence preserves approximately 160 square metres of polychrome mosaic floors featuring geometric patterns, floral motifs, and mythological figures. Its centrepiece is a masterful opus vermiculatum portrait of the Greek goddess Eirene (Peace), which gave the house its name. Discovered in 1983-84 during underpass construction, it was restored in 2003-04 and is now exhibited at the Trakart Cultural Center.
