Varna, Bulgaria

Varna, historically known as Odessos, was founded by Milesian Greek colonists at the end of the 7th century BC on the site of an earlier Thracian settlement along the Black Sea coast. In 15 AD it became part of the Roman province of Moesia and thrived as a major port. Its Roman Thermae, built in the late 2nd century AD, are the largest Roman public bath remains in Bulgaria and fourth-largest known in Europe. The city was conquered and abandoned around 614 AD, later resettled and renamed Varna after the First Bulgarian Empire took control in 680 AD.
